Nick Gates carted off field September 2021

Giants OL Nick Gates, who fractured his lower left leg in Week 2 against Washington, has been placed on season-ending IR.

But the situation could be more dire than that.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, head coach Joe Judge said that Gates remains hospitalized in Virginia and that the injury could be “career-ending.”

“We’re confident he’ll be able to come back, but yes, it could be career-ending,” Judge said.

Gates had surgery on Friday and will undergo another procedure before leaving the hospital, Judge said.

Gates was making his first career start at left guard in Week 2 when he suffered the injury.

Before Sunday, Gates had been a center for the Giants, having started all 16 games there during the 2020 season.

The 25-year-old signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2018.

LEMIEUX NOT RULED OUT YET

The Giants announced on Wednesday that Shane Lemieux underwent surgery on his torn left patellar tendon and that he is expected to miss the rest of the season.

However, Judge said on Thursday that Lemieux has not yet been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
