We had a feeling it would be the case, but now it is official. True freshman 5-star quarterback Kyle McCord will get the nod as the starter against Akron with Jack Miller waiting in the wings.

McCord getting the start under center comes because of redshirt freshman starting quarterback C.J. Stroud getting the day off because of soreness in his throwing shoulder. The speculation of whether McCord or Miller would be named starter was bantered about all week, but based on the pecking order during fall, it seemed clear that McCord had done enough to separate himself. Then, via the Ohio State social media pages, the announcement was made official just prior to game time.

With the start, McCord becomes just the fourth true freshman to start in Ohio State football history, joining Art Schlichter, Terrelle Pryor, and Braxton Miller.

Stroud was not listed as unavailable on the team’s status report, but earlier in the week, Day said that he would only be used in an “emergency capacity.” Let’s hope we don’t see the first-year starter because that would mean that things are in more peril than anyone wants.

McCord is out of the Philadelphia area and quarterbacked the same high school team as fellow teammate and freshman wide receiver Marvin Harrison, Jr.

Go get ’em young man.
