One of the biggest fish in the 2023 recruiting class is back on the market as five-star running back Rueben Owens decommitted from Texas on Thursday after choosing the Longhorns on Feb. 25.

Owens is ranked the No. 2 running back in the class of 2023 by 247Sports’ composite rankings and is widely considered a can’t-miss prospect. While it isn’t impossible for him to still wind up committing to Texas once again, this is an obvious huge loss on the recruiting trail for the Longhorns if he winds up elsewhere.

In a report from 247Sports’ Steve Wiltfong, it is believed that Alabama, Texas A&M, Georgia and USC are the teams with the best chance of landing Owens. But, both Oklahoma and Ohio State are considered to be in the picture.

Lincoln Riley and the Sooners were chasing Owens before his commitment to Texas, officially offering him on Jan. 10. It will not be easy to sway him to Norman, but it sure doesn’t mean they will not try or shouldn’t. Finding a way to bring Owens aboard would be a massive pickup so he is worth the effort.

Sooners Wire will certainly keep a close eye on Owens moving forward and provide more updates on his reopened recruitment as they become available.
