Former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees joined Peyton and Eli Manning’s “Monday Night Football” simulcast for the fourth quarter in their 13-10 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. It was the first time Brees offered live commentary on a Saints game this season as they have yet to play a Sunday night football game over on NBC Sports.
The Mannings asked Brees to survey the state of the current New Orleans offense, Jameis Winston’s development and what he noticed last year, insight into who calls protections, and facing this defense in training camp and practice. His real-time comments on the performance of receivers was perhaps most telling. Here’s what Brees had to say on Monday night during the ESPN2 broadcast:
The Mannings and Brees are discussing high school football if you were wondering their thoughts on this game

Brees on whether this offense looks different: “it’s obviously the same plays, but probably a bit different.” #analysis

Brees on the #Saints defense and going against in practice: “we had tougher battles in training camp than we did against anyone during the season. Multiple looks, pressure galore.” Says Allen doing phenomal with his schemes and high man coverage correlating with quality of DBs.

Brees on Winston: “Jameis was great to be around. You talk about a man that loves football. Every moment I was watching film he was there as well, sometimes with me, he developed his own routines. He’s come a long way, recognized the things in Tampa that got him in trouble.”

Brees says Winston would ask 20 questions before every game, soak it up like a sponge. Would remind him to lean on his talents & athleticism, some things he frankly does better. “If you make good decisions, good things can happen. That doesn’t always show up on the stat sheet.”

Brees on who made protection calls: “I made all the mic calls, made all the protection calls.” Noted he didn’t do that once until joining the Saints in 2006. Says he couldn’t imagine not being the one to call protections and determine who’d come free, unsurprisingly 😂

Brees on Tre’Quan on that play: “oh boy”
— Maddy Hudak (@MaddyHudak_94) October 26, 2021
Brees: “Sean’s motto with the referees is we’re gonna kill ‘em with kindness.” Huh 😭

Brees calling this play: “looks like we got guy flexed right slot right here. Man to man…ah..what are we doing.” Same, Drew

Brees on Allen scheming against the two-minute drill: “he’s gonna have pressures that’ll leave you one short. It’s just a question on when he’ll dial it up.”
