Sep. 12—Grand Forks Red River won the 2021 Cushman Classic in impressive fashion last week.

The Roughriders beat rival Grand Forks Central, celebrated by ringing the bell in the middle of the field and looked to carry momentum from that victory for the rest of the season.

It didn’t work out that way, though.

The Roughriders lost 20-17 at Devils Lake in its first game since winning the crosstown rivalry game.

The Firebirds, who improved to 2-1, led 14-10 at halftime and extended that lead to 20-10 in the third quarter.

With the loss, Red River dropped to 1-2 on the season. Both of Red River’s losses came on the road. The Roughriders opened the season with a 30-8 loss at Wahpeton.

Red River hosts Fargo South next Friday.

The Firebirds, who beat Valley City 7-6 last week, will take a two-game winning streak into next Friday’s game at Turtle Mountain.
