Game notes: The Tigers close out this two-game set, the last of their 2021 interleague play, with Matt Manning on the mound. Manning was sharp in an abbreviated start Wednesday vs. the Pittsburgh Pirates, striking out four, giving up one run and walking one over three innings (52 pitches). Woodruff, the Brewers’ right-hander, missed a turn in the rotation but is back to build on his National League Cy Young case. He’s given up four or more earned runs just four times this season, including his last time out Sept. 6 vs. the Philadelphia Phillies. Woodruff has struck out 191 in 163 1/3 innings with a 0.97 WHIP (all career highs). Milwaukee, coasting to an NL Central title and a third straight postseason, heads to Chicago for three games with the Cubs after the series. The Tigers head to Florida for another series with the Tampa Bay Rays. Detroit topped Tampa twice last week to beat the first-place Rays in a three-game series.
