Game notes: The Tigers on Sunday will go for their first series win of the season vs. the White Sox. The South Siders had won nine of the teams’ 11 meetings coming into this three-game set. Manning was shelled (nine hits and nine runs vs. Cleveland) in his last outing and gets a tough test on Independence Day: a Chicago offense that’s ranked in the league’s top 10 in OPS and runs but relies on walks and timely hits instead of the long ball. Giolito faces Detroit for the third time this season and 13th time in his career. He saw the Tigers in back-to-back games last month, giving up four earned runs in seven innings and taking a loss June 5 before giving up two earned runs in six innings for a no decision (that the White Sox eventually won) on June 11. In 13 innings vs. the Tigers in 2021, he’s struck out 18, walked one and given up five home runs.
