Despite CFP selection, Ohio State transfer portal departures begins with Jaylen Johnson

Ohio State football lost a safety to the transfer portal Monday.

Second-year safety Jaylen Johnson was the Buckeyes’ first entry into the transfer portal since the regular season ended, The Dispatch confirmed Monday.

Jaylen Johnson was a three-star safety in Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class

Johnson was one of three safeties in Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class, along with four-star Andre Turrentine, who transferred to Tennessee after the 2021 season, and four-star Jantzen Dunn.

Johnson was the No. 30 safety in the country according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, and the No. 12 prospect in Ohio, coming out of La Salle in Cincinnati and earning Greater Catholic League co-defensive back of the year honors after recording 55 tackles for the Lancers as a senior.

He also held offers from Cincinnati, Indiana, Iowa State, Kentucky, Lousiville, Michigan State and Penn State, among others.

Jaylen Johnson never played in a game for Ohio State

Johnson spent two seasons with Ohio State, but never appeared in a game for the Buckeyes, coming.

He came in with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and did not move into the rotation in his second season with the program where the Buckeyes had 10 safeties on scholarship.

Jaylen Johnson is the third player to transfer from Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class

Johnson is not the first player from Ohio State’s 2021 recruiting class to leave the program.

The former three-star safety joins Turrentine (Tennessee) and quarterback Quinn Ewers (Texas) as players who have transferred from the Buckeyes’ second-ranked 2021 recruiting class.

Johnson has three years of eligibility remaining after redshirting his freshman season.
