“The reaction between those two human beings was just good for baseball last night,” Ross said Thursday, “as bad as it sucks to lose.”
The Cubs lost by a landslide Wednesday, 10-0 at Atlanta. The lopsided score opened the door for three Cubs position players to take the mound in late innings, combining for two shutout frames.
Rizzo’s 0.2 innings included a walk to Ronald Acuña Jr. and Freeman’s strikeout. Cubs infielder Matt Duffy took over for Rizzo and induced a groundball to end the frame. Infielder Eric Sogard gave up two hits and hit a batter, but he pitched out of the jam with a grin on his face.
According to Ross, the Cubs’ research and development department printed out pitch data reports for all three position players.
“It was nice to have that light moment,” Ross said, “at the back-end of a crappy game.”
