May 16—Roswell, Hope Christian and St. Michael’s were the first-place dance squads at the state spirit championships Saturday afternoon at the Pit.

The Coyotes took the Class 5A title, the Huskies won in 4A and the Lady Horsemen — as they so often do in the smallest class — captured the Class 1A-3A crown.

Hope won the most recent 4A dance championship, in 2019.

“There were definitely some challenges with … doing two routines on the same day within 45 minutes of each other, but they took the challenge head on,” Huskies coach Ashley Nix said.

Hope scored a strong 92.50 on its first routine, and in fact had two of the three highest scores in that classification Saturday as the Huskies outpointed runner-up St. Pius, 178-165.08.

“It was kind of a bittersweet moment,” said Hope’s Bela Olague, one of two seniors on the squad. “Since we weren’t able to have state last year, it’s special to be able to do this on behalf of last year’s seniors who didn’t get to have this experience.”

The award ceremony was done virtually this year, but that didn’t diminish Hope’s excitement at winning a blue trophy.

“I felt a sense of pure joy,” said Hope’s other senior, Ashley Manfre. “It was something every dancer dreams of.”

In 5A, Roswell posted the two highest scores as the Coyotes, who moved up into the larger class a couple of years ago, showed they can dominate the largest schools as well as they did when they were in the second-largest division.

Roswell scored 182.95 total points, 17 ahead of second-place Farmington. It is Roswell’s 13th dance title, coach Kim Castro said, and first since 2018.

“It was awesome,” Castro said. “It was difficult moving up against totally different teams, but I told the girls not to focus on who the competition was, just do the best you can do.”

St. Michael’s has won the small-school title three years running. It was the only school to be awarded a trophy in 1A-3A this year.
