INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts took advantage of a playoff team’s roster machinations to land a veteran player Tuesday.

Indianapolis claimed center Dakoda Shepley off waivers from the Cowboys, a move that takes Shepley out of the picture for a team that plays Tampa Bay in the wild card round of the NFL playoffs Monday night.

Dallas intended to sign Shepley back to the practice squad this week after initially activating him to the 53-man roster, according to the Dallas Morning News.

But the Colts cut short those plans, claiming an interior lineman who has played in 13 games over the past three seasons with the Niners, Seahawks and Cowboys.

A native of Canada, Shepley has also played in the CFL.

Indianapolis had trouble developing interior depth on the offensive line this season. The Colts lost former starting right guard Mark Glowinski and top backup guard Chris Reed in free agency last year, and general manager Chris Ballard elected to promote Danny Pinter to the starting right guard role with second-year player Will Fries to back up Pinter.

Pinter faltered, and Fries eventually took over. Shepley, a native of Canada, has spent most of his time in the NFL playing center.
