Christian Eriksen is “awake” after collapsing during Denmark’s Euro 2020 match against Finland.
The referee stopped the game after the 29-year-old Danish midfielder fell to the ground in the first half on Saturday.
Paramedics were seen resuscitating Eriksen on the pitch while his teammates shielded him from the view of the cameras.
Eriksen, who plays for Inter Milan, was eventually taken away on a stretcher, and the match was suspended.
The Denmark FA has now confirmed he is conscious.
It said in a statement: “Christian Eriksen is awake and is for further examinations at Rigshospitalet. The match is temporarily postponed.”
UEFA also confirmed in a tweet Eriksen “has been stabilised” after a Reuters photographer at the game saw him raise his hand as he was carried from the pitch.
Eriksen collapsed suddenly in the 42nd minute of the match while running near the left touchline.
Danish teammates Martin Braithwaite and Thomas Delaney rushed to assist him, with Delaney beckoning furiously for medical assistance.
As silence fell over the 16,000-strong crowd, Eriksen’s teammates formed a ring around him as medics pumped his chest just before halftime in the Group B clash.
Both teams subsequently left the field with officials holding up sheets to hide the stricken player from view, and the stadium announcer told fans that the game had been suspended due to a medical emergency and to stay in their seats.
When the cameras returned to the BBC studio, presenter Gary Lineker said: “It’s one of the most distressing scenes I think I’ve ever seen at a football match.
“Christian Eriksen falling to the ground, his team-mates surrounding him.
“I’m clearly distraught and both his team-mates and the Finland team.”
Co-presenter Alex Scott added: “I’m getting emotional because I can’t believe it.”
The game was scoreless when the incident occurred.
