Pinder injury makes bad series vs. Astros even worse originally appeared on NBC Sports Bayarea

It couldn’t have gone any worse for the Athletics, and yet — it did.

On the final out of the A’s 4-3 loss to the Houston Astros on Wednesday night at Minute Maid Park, utility player Chad Pinder pulled up in obvious pain, hobbling down the first base line.

A trainer and manager Bob Melvin tended to Pinder and it was later determined that he sustained a right hamstring injury. It only adds to the issues Oakland has been facing recently.

Melvin said Pinder has dealt with hamstring issues before, and it doesn’t look like we’ll be seeing him back on the A’s roster anytime soon.

“I can’t imagine he’s going to be ready to play for a bit,” Melvin said following the game.

In the top of the ninth inning with two outs, Pinder grounded out to Astros shortstop Carlos Correa. As Pinder stepped across first base, he grabbed the back of his right leg.

The A’s have lost 13 of their last 17 games. Per Mercury News’ Shayna Rubin, the A’s are winless in their last six series, something Oakland hasn’t done since 2017.

“We just don’t have a lot of margin for error right now,” Melvin said after the game.

“We’re going through a bad streak right now where it seems like everything that goes wrong, everything that can go wrong, is at this point.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Melvin said A’s reliever Trevor Rosenthal will undergo hip surgery next Tuesday to repair a torn labrum and will miss the entire 2021 season. He has yet to throw a pitch for the A’s.

Between the injuries to Rosenthal and Pinder, and the loss to the Astros that drops the A’s 5 1/2 games behind in the AL West, it was a bad day all around for the green and gold.
