Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will finally get his chance to unify the super middleweight division after he agreed to terms with IBF champion Caleb Plant for a November pay-per-view fight.
ESPN first reported Thursday that Alvarez, who holds the WBA-WBC-WBO super middleweight belts, would meet Plant in November on a Premier Boxing Champions pay-per-view card. The Mexican superstar later officially announced via social media the fight is indeed set for Nov. 6.
For all of his accomplishments, Alvarez has never held an undisputed title. On Dec. 19, he defeated Callum Smith in San Antonio to win the WBA and WBC belts. On May 8, he stopped unbeaten Billy Joe Saunders after eight rounds to claim the WBO belt.
That left only the unbeaten Plant and his IBF belt. Alvarez had hoped to fight Plant on Mexican Independence Day weekend in September, but talks dragged on and the sides ran out of time to get it done.
The idea of pursuing the undisputed super middleweight belt was the brainchild of Alvarez trainer Eddy Reynoso, who noted that a Mexican fighter has never held an undisputed title in the four-belt era.
Plant, 29, is 21-0 with 12 knockouts. He won the IBF belt on Jan. 13, 2019, when he defeated Jose Uzcategui by unanimous decision in Los Angeles. He’s successfully defended it against Mike Lee, Vincent Feigenbutz and Caleb Truax.
He’s never, though, fought anyone remotely near the caliber of Alvarez, who is 56-1-2 with 38 knockouts. Alvarez has held titles at super welterweight, middleweight, super middleweight and light heavyweight.
