Cashman and Boone in spring training

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman didn’t mince words when talking about the Yankees’ struggles on Tuesday, but he did voice more support for manager Aaron Boone.

Speaking with reporters at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, Cashman did not hold back on his team’s recent poor performance, but he did say that he coaching staff is not the issue.

“This is not an Aaron Boone problem,” Cashman said, via Brendan Kuty of NJ.com. “This is not a coaching staff problem.”

“They’re doing what they need to do but we’re not getting the results we need. So, they’ve got my support. We’re in this together and I’m not making any recommendations to any of these people because I know that they’re doing what they need to be doing. Just not getting the results. It’s easy, from my chair, to say let me throw something overboard to just satisfy the masses. It’s harder to actually stick with what you’ve got because you believe in it. These people care. They’re working their ass off. They’re really good at what they do. We’re not getting the results. I’m the head of baseball operations. That’s more on me than them.”

The Bombers currently find themselves in fourth place in the AL East with a 40-38 record, 7.5 games behind the Boston Red Sox for first place in the division. The Yankees are just 4-6 in their last 10 games, including a three-game weekend sweep at the hands of the Red Sox, and Cashman knows things need to get turned around.

“I know they urgently want to get on track, but I also know that we suck right now, as bad as you can be,” Cashman said, via Greg Joyce of the New York Post. “Trying to knock ourselves out of that is the effort, but until we get online and start playing high again, it’s gonna look bad. It plays bad and it stinks to high heavens. Right now, we gotta own that.

“I gotta call it like I see it: It’s pretty bad right now.”
