Jun. 19—BAXTER — Baxter’s baseball team got into a shootout against Janesville on Wednesday.
The Bolts took on the unbeaten Wildcats but couldn’t hold two different leads before losing 12-10 in eight innings.
Baxter led the Iowa Star Conference cross-division game 4-3 after four innings but Janesville’s big five-run fifth inning helped them flip the script.
The Bolts scored four in the bottom of the sixth to go back in front, but the Wildcats (9-0) tied in the seventh and won it with a pair in the eighth.
Baxter (2-11) tallied 12 hits and committed three errors. Janesville had five errors.
Rory Heer led the way with three hits and Jake Travis and Cody Damman each had two hits.
Heer added one run, one RBI, one walk and four steals, Damman chipped in one run, two walks and two steals and Travis had two runs and two walks.
Ben Richardson, Jalen Porter, Nate McMinamen, Perrin Sulzie and Brad Matthews all had one hit.
Richardson also finished with one run, one RBI, one walk and one steal and Matthews added one run, one RBI, one walk and one hit by pitch.
Porter chipped in one run, one RBI and two steals, McMinamen had one run and two RBIs and Sulzie tallied two runs, one RBI and one walk.
Andrew Klemme (1-2) was the starting pitcher and he took the loss after pitching into the fifth inning and allowing six earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts and five walks.
Jake Travis got one out in the fifth but allowed two earned runs on three hits.
Matthews finished the game and allowed four earned runs on five hits with three strikeouts, one walk and four hit batters in 3 2/3 innings.
SOFTBALL
Janesville 15, Baxter 2, 4 innings
Baxter’s softball team had trouble slowing down Janesville during an Iowa Star Conference cross-division home game on Wednesday.
The Wildcats plated three runs in the first and six in each of the second and fourth innings during a 15-2, four-inning victory.
The Bolts (6-7) were limited to three hits and committed five errors.
Mandee Selover had two of the team’s three hits and chipped in an RBI. One of her hits was a double.
Evelyn Boothroyd got the other hit and walked once and Corryn Padget, Allison Colyn and Maddie Pierce each drew one walk.
Pierce added one run and one steal and Lilie Vansice scored one run and stole one base.
Kinley Bethards (3-5) started in the circle and took the loss after allowing nine runs — one earned — on eight hits in two innings.
Emie Tuhn spun the final two innings and she allowed six earned runs on seven hits with one strikeout and one walk.
Dani Hughes homered for Janesville (5-9) and Pyper MCarville and Naomi Hovenga each had three hits and two runs.
