Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield isn’t shy about expressing his opinions. That’s one of the things Cleveland fans generally like about No. 6. His teammates certainly appreciate it, and what Mayfield stated about another team’s quarterback situation demonstrates why players gravitate to Mayfield.
Mayfield took up in defense of Bears quarterback Andy Dalton. It’s not exactly a popular side to take with Chicago infatuated with (admittedly impressive) rookie QB Justin Fields, but Mayfield turned the conversation into a different lane.
When Dalton offered up a lengthy answer to a fair question about his ongoing QB battle with Fields, the full answer got lost in the haze of a tasty soundbite. And that really bothered Mayfield, who knows a thing or two about having his comments misconstrued
Mayfield posted this to his Instagram story feed on Wednesday, taking up for Dalton and chastising the media for using the quote out of context:
Here’s the full answer Dalton gave,
“Do I want the fans behind me and this team and all that kind of stuff? Yes. Do I want them behind Justin? Absolutely I do. But that’s not my focus, I can’t focus on all that right now. Justin’s gonna have his time and Justin’s gonna have a great career, but right now it’s my time and so right now my focus is on being the best player I can be for this team and do everything I can to help this team win.”
Mayfield has a definite point. This was not Dalton trying to diss Fields, something that is quite obvious in watching the video clip from where the quote is taken.
