Oakland A’s starting pitcher Chris Bassitt was taken off the field on a cart on Tuesday after being hit in the face with a 100 mph line drive. 

The incident occurred in the second inning of Oakland’s game against the Chicago White Sox. Chicago outfielder Brian Goodwin hit a 100.1 mph comebacker off a Bassitt pitch that hit the A’s starter on the right side of his face. Bassitt immediately fell to the ground.

Play stopped as trainers attended to Bassitt on the mound while stunned players and fans watched the scene unfold.

Bassitt eventually left the field on a cart. The A’s later announced that Bassitt was conscious and en route to a hospital.

No further updates on his status were immediately available. Bassitt is Oakland’s best pitcher this season, with a a 3.06 ERA and 12-3 record entering Tuesday’s game. The 32-year-old made his first All-Star team in July.
