Hours before the Michigan State football team prepared to face Nebraska, one of its players began the process of leaving the program.

Freshman defensive end Alex Okelo entered the NCAA transfer portal Saturday.

A former three-star recruit from Nashville, Tennessee, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound Okelo has yet to play a collegiate snap.

SCOUTING REPORT, PREDICTION: Michigan State vs. Nebraska

Okelo becomes the first member of the 2021 team to explore a transfer after 17 scholarship players on the Spartans’ roster entered the portal during the previous academic year.

His departure comes at a strange time. The No. 21 Spartans just entered both polls and hold a 3-0 record with fan enthusiasm at its highest point since second-year coach Mel Tucker was hired.
